Reference Architecture Working Group

Digital Identity New Zealand (DINZ) is convening a working group to collaboratively articulate the Reference Architecture for digital identity in Aotearoa New Zealand. The Reference Architecture will be aligned with the Digital Identity Services Trust Framework Act and other relevant standards and initiatives, while reflecting the needs of both the public and private sectors.

The group will define, draft, and maintain the Reference Architecture so it is clear, practical, and accessible to the wider ecosystem, and can help inform future regulatory settings through its development.

Current focus / updates

The Reference Architecture Working Group has progressed early alignment work and is now shaping the first set of practical artefacts for the ecosystem. Current highlights include:

  • Priority reference use cases confirmed: the group has voted on and confirmed the initial set of priority reference use cases that will anchor the first iteration of the Reference Architecture.
  • mDoc mapping completed (baseline): the group has mapped the mDoc standard to the New Zealand regulatory context to support consistent interpretation and implementation planning.
  • Sovereign namespace proposals under consideration: proposals are being explored to enable a sovereign namespace approach—paving the way for the benefits of RealMe without requiring a centrally issued ID card or “super credential.”
  • Ecosystem enablement: the Reference Architecture is being shaped to remain ecosystem-wide and open, enabling industry players and community consortiums to emerge and collaborate, while staying aligned to the Trust Framework Act and related settings.

This Working Group is restricted to DINZ Members.
