The State of Digital Identity in Aotearoa | November Newsletter

###

Kia ora e te whānau

October, November and December are the busiest months for DINZ as they are in many organisations. DINZ has been hard at work planning the Digital Trust Hui Taumata 2023 confirmed for 1 Aug 2023 at Te Papa Tongarewa, Wellington. Save that date! Get in touch to sponsor or exhibit.

We have been finalising the landscape report into the state of digital identity in Aotearoa that incorporates this year’s surveys of the general public and businesses. Alongside a review of all our mahi in 2022, DINZ research key insights will be shared with NZTech association members at the end of year events in Auckland, Wellington and online next week prior to the report publication.

It’s Fraud Awareness Week with some great tips from the good folks at Sorted. Did you know that 78% of New Zealanders are concerned about the protection of their identity and use of personal data by organisations? And that only 33% of businesses feel fully equipped to protect their customer’s personal data.

In early November a strongly attended DINZ event saw Microsoft’s digital identity specialist Brandon Murdoch shared his technical perspectives on a range of issues confronting the industry today. You can watch the webinar here.

It got me thinking again about an emerging trend in Aotearoa’s digital ecosystem where financial support favours vertical industry sectors over cross-cutting domains of expert knowledge such as DINZ. Keeping financial support in balance is challenging but nevertheless critical if industry is to deliver safe, predictable, consistent and interoperable customer experiences for people encountering public services, health, commerce, banking and other sectors as they go about their digital lives. The 12 months of 2023 are the last before the Digital Identity Trust Framework Act is expected to come into force, while drafting CDR and Open Banking might progress alongside in parallel. Let’s extend the season of goodwill to pull forward common interest and push back self interest for a better ‘digital identiful’ Aotearoa.

This is DINZ’s last newsletter for 2022 so Ngā mihi o te Kirihimete me te Tau Hou.
Colin and the DINZ Executive Council
